10 Commandments of Mosquito Control for Homeowners

1. Eliminate Standing Water

2. Flatten ALL types of open cans or containers

3. Completely seal cesspools and screen all vents

4. Clean clogged roof gutters

5. Cover all standing receptacles

6. Empty & refill outdoor bird baths every few days

7. Stock with fish or aerated garden tools and ponds

8. Tilt wheelbarrows and machines with containers to prevent holding water

9. Empty watering cans and wading pools after use

10. Dispose of old tires or anything that holds water

Mosquitoes breed only in water.

Mosquitoes must have water for at least 7 days to complete their development.  Any standing water may breed mosquitoes

Identifying a Basic Midwest Mosquito Genera

       Knowing genus and species habitats can help with identifying procedures, for example:

- Anopheles prefer freshwater

- Culex pipiens prefer organic rich waters and rely on warmer temperatures

- Culiseta generally prefer cooler temperatures

- Psorophora prefer freshwater (rain filled pools) and floodwaters areas

- Ochlerotatus triseriatus prefers treeholes or similar habitats
